Expanding the Stage: The Studio for Music and Theatre Arts Hits a High Note

With guidance from the Alabama SBDC, a passionate artist transformed her vision into a thriving performing arts studio now expanding its footprint and impact.

After years of professional training and performance experience, Elena Ontiveros, the founder of The Studio for Music and Theatre Arts, returned to her hometown determined to fill a noticeable gap in performing arts education, especially for adults. Though she had the vision and professional training, she was unsure how to navigate the logistical and legal steps of opening a business in Alabama. Like many first-time entrepreneurs, Elena needed guidance on forming a legitimate business entity and understanding state requirements to launch and sustain her venture.

The Alabama SBDC at UAH provided essential support during the startup phase, helping the Elena understand the steps needed to formally establish her business, offering clear guidance and a personal level of care that made the process manageable. The SBDC business advising helped build a solid foundation for The Studio to open legally, operate professionally, and grow intentionally. Elena also participated in SBDC webinars, which she found incredibly valuable and plans to use as resources for future growth.

Since working with the SBDC in 2022, The Studio for Music and Theatre Arts has flourished, celebrating their third anniversary in June 2025 with a business expansion. The Studio has outgrown its original 1,400 sq. ft. space and is now undergoing an expansion to a 2,400 sq. ft. facility, allowing for additional studio classrooms, group teaching areas, and the hiring of instructors. Elena credits the Alabama SBDC with helping her get off the ground, and she’s preparing for even more community impact through expanded programs and partnerships.
